Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound scans & sports injuries

bodyUltrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints throughout the body, and is often used to diagnose sprains, tears, strains and other soft tissue conditions, particularly in the recovery of sports injuries.

It is completely safe and does not use ionising radiation (as in x-rays), and so there is no radiation exposure. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. For that reason, if you are suffering from pain in any of your joints, then ultrasound will help you in getting an accurate diagnosis and evaluating effective treatments such as surgical intervention, monitoring your therapy and assisting physiotherapy treatments.

What are some common uses of the procedure?

Ultrasound images are typically used to help diagnose:

  • tendon tears, or tendinitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder, Achilles tendon in the ankle and other tendons throughout the body.
  • muscle tears, masses or fluid collections.
  • ligament sprains or tears.
  • inflammation or fluid
  • early changes of rheumatoid arthritis.
  • nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • benign and malignant soft tissue tumours.
  • ganglion cysts.
  • hernias.
  • foreign bodies in the soft tissues (such as splinters or glass).

We generally ask you to allow between 15 to 30 minutes for the scan to take place. The first stage is to understand your clinical symptoms, so that we can capture any changes with movement. We might ask you to demonstrate or describe the mechanisms of your injury, direct us to areas of tenderness and discuss times or moments of change. Depending on the area being examined; we will look to evaluate the joint, muscle, ligament or tendon, and you may be asked to lay or sit on the ultrasound bed or swivel chair. A water-based gel is applied to the area and the scan probe is then easily moved around the area to capture all the necessary images.

Our clinics are operated by fully trained MSK sonographers with the backing of Consultant Radiologists if required.
